Prompt #011

Prompt #011 – Wine Labels

Objective: Design a wine label for an already existing brand that you want to refresh or you can make up your own wine brand! Think about the audience you’re trying to go after before you create these. For example, are you designing for a younger millennial customer or a more mature audience? This will help determine your final design decisions.

When creating your wine label there are a few things you need to include: a logo, producer name (if not in the logo), region, the year made, grape variety, bottle volume and alcohol content. Feel free to add any additional information to your label. We have included some links below under the “Notes & Suggestions” section for some free mockups you can use to apply your final design to.

Suggested Size: Base the size of your label on the mockup that you choose

Suggested Program: Indesign, Illustrator or Affinity Designer

Goal Date: November 30th

PD Notes & Suggestions: Here are some free mockups you can download and use to apply your design to: Wine Bottle Mockup 1, Wine Bottle Mockup 2 and Wine Bottle Mockup 3.

Suggested Size: Any size or proportion will work as these are vectors

Suggested Program: Adobe Illustrator or Affinity Designer

Prompt #009

Prompt #009 – Botanical Line Drawings

Objective: Create a collection of botanical illustrations either by hand using pen & ink then refining on the computer or you can jump right onto the computer, whichever you prefer. Create as many or little as you want for your set or collection. The word “botanical” refers to anything relating to plants so feel free to explore more than just the plants themselves.

Suggested Size: Any size or proportion will work

Suggested Program: Illustrator or any vector-based program is preferred

Goal Date: September 30th

PD Notes & Suggestions: As always we encourage you to start out with sketching your ideas on paper before jumping on the computer. You can draw your sets using ink pens or markers and then scan them in and live trace your actual sketches if you want a rougher feel or you can use them as a source of inspiration and smooth them out more in Illustrator using the pen tool, etc. Try out different color palettes with your set and maybe export multiple sets with different color themes. When your set is complete export your set using the libraries panel inside of Illustrator. If you’re not sure how to do this here is a short video that shows you how. You can also save your file as an eps or svg and open it up any time you want to pull something from it.

Suggested Program: Adobe Illustrator or Affinity Designer

Goal Date: August 31st

PD Notes & Suggestions: You can work with color gradients to create depth and realism, or keep them as line art… they also work great as photomasks! These could be single or multifaceted shapes. Play around with different depths of fields to create a range of shapes.

Prompt #007

Prompt #007 – Watercolor Shapes & Backgrounds

Objective: Create a set/collection of watercolor shapes or backgrounds! These
could include different geometric shapes, brush strokes, splatters, colors, etc.

Suggested Size: Any size or proportion will work
(large scale is better so these can be used in a variety of print sizes later.=)

Suggested Program: Photoshop, Procreate, Affinity Designer or Illustrator.

Goal Date: July 31st

PD Notes & Suggestions: We encourage you as always to start on paper and have fun creating shapes and textures using real watercolor paint. Then you can scan in your watercolor explorations and refine your shapes/backgrounds on the computer from there. In order to keep the authentic watercolor feeling, we suggest saving these out as high-res png or tiff files. You can also vectorize and save them out as an eps or svg. If you don’t feel like starting on paper maybe try using an app like the Procreate App or Adobe Fresco and play around with the digital watercolor brushes on there. Try out different color palettes with your set and maybe export multiple sets with different color themes. When your set is complete export using the libraries panel inside of Illustrator. If you’re not sure how to do this here is a short video that shows you how.

Prompt #006

Prompt #006 – Summer Vector Graphic Set

Objective: You’ll be creating your own set of Summer inspired vector graphics. A vector graphic set is a collection of like-themed elements that you can use in a variety of ways within your projects. We thought it would be fun to make it a Summer theme so feel free to create your set with whatever “Summer” means to you. For example, you could create a set of vector plants, beach items or even abstract summer shapes that feel light, airy and bright.

Suggested Size: Any size or proportion will work

Suggested Program: Illustrator or any vector-based program

Goal Date: June 30th

PD Preferred GIF Creation Method: As always we encourage you to start out with sketching your ideas on paper before jumping on the computer. Prompt #005

Prompt #005 – Hand-Lettered Inspirational Message/Word(s)

Objective: We could all use a little extra inspiration/motivation right now, so for this month’s Prompt you’ll be creating your own hand-lettered inspirational message or word(s) that are inspiring to you. Explore different styles and applications to create interesting compositions that you can share on social or apply to products.

Suggested Size: Any size or proportion will work, think of how/where you’d like to use your final graphic to help determine this.

Suggested Program: Photoshop, Illustrator, Affinity Designer
iPad app suggestions: Procreate, Adobe Fresco/Photoshop, Affinity Designer/Photo, Paper by WeTransfer

Goal Date: May 31st

PD Notes & Suggestions: These can be strictly created using pen and paper, or you can take a photo to manipulate your lettering or use it as a guide to digitize and further explore from there. Your sketches can also just be a starting off point before getting started digitally. Another great option is using a tablet with a pen, like that of the iPad Pro and Apple Pencil, or a drawing tablet for your computer like a Wacom. These will give you that hand-drawn effect with more control rather than using your mouse with the added benefit that you’re working in digital and can scale as needed… without the waste of paper 🙂

Prompt #004 – IG Story Stickers or GIF Set

Objective: You’ll be creating your own set of IG Story Stickers, which are transparent background GIFs that can be applied to your IG Stories, but if you’re not on the Gram you can also use them as regular GIFs that can be used on social, in emails or on your website.

We will be sharing tips throughout the month on how you can get your own branded GIPHY account so you and others can use your stickers.

Suggested Size: Any size or proportion will work*

Suggested Program: Illustrator and Photoshop

Goal Date: April 30th

* If uploading to GIPHY for use in your IG Stories the final GIF is limited to 100MB, but they recommend 8MB or less.

Design these with an imaginary or existing brand in mind. If you need more help getting your design started, check out our client type database!

PD Preferred GIF Creation Method: Create your designs in Illustrator, once you have the final design create multiple artboards for each frame of your animation. Export out each frame into a folder, then open Photoshop and import each frame as its own layer. Open the Timeline dialogue box and select “Create Frame Animation”. Then create a new frame for each layer of your import. Ensure the Loop setting is set to “Forever”. When ready to export you’ll need to open the “Save for Web (Legacy)” (Command+Option+Shift+S), with the GIF setting and Transparency checked. Once exported you can then upload to GIPHY or wherever you choose to use the GIFs.

NOTE: Be sure to keep in mind that these will be a loop animation, so you might have to play around with adding a few extra frames at the end to create a smooth animation.

If you are making IG Story Stickers, please note that GIPHY has some Requirements and Tips for Improving Sticker Quality. One of the biggest requirements to note is that “At least 20% of the first frame must be transparent”.

Prompt #003

Prompt #003 – Create a Repeating Pattern

Objective: Whether you start by sketching or jumping right onto the computer it’s easy to create your own seamless repeating patterns. These patterns can then be used in a variety of applications or mediums. If you’re new to creating patterns check out the tips below.

Suggested Size: Any size or proportion will work.

Suggested Program: Illustrator

Goal Date: March 31

Design these with an imaginary or existing brand in mind. If you need more help getting your design started, check out our client type database!

Pattern Tips: If you’re new to creating patterns, try starting out with simple shapes. The more complicated the shapes the more difficult it will be to create a seamless repeat pattern. To test if your pattern is seamless on all sides draw an invisible box around your pattern (this is the parameter of the pattern) and then duplicate the whole thing to the right of it and see if the spacing matches up. Follow this same step on all sides until it perfectly matches up on each side. If it doesn’t match up you will have to either adjust your shapes or adjust the padding around the invisible box. There are multiple ways to create seamless patterns in Illustrator, this is the manual method that can be done in any version of Illustrator and another way is using the Pattern Maker in Illustrator CS6+.
